In 2022, a small group of parents in our community came together, united by one powerful truth: raising a child with a disability can be both a journey of love and a battle against barriers. They saw how families like theirs struggled—not because of lack of care or determination—but because there were no real systems in place to support them.
These parents dreamed of changing that. They wanted more than sympathy; they wanted action. They imagined a place where families could find resources, be heard and work together to create lasting change. And so, the Parents of Children with Disabilities Association (POCWIDA) was born.
As they worked side by side, another challenge became clear: poverty was robbing many children of opportunities.
Parents could not access loans from banks—collateral requirements shut the door on them before they could even try. Determined to find a solution, the group began pooling their own savings.
From these humble contributions grew a revolving fund, paired with training in business management, to help parents start or expand small businesses. The goal was simple yet powerful—equip families to earn a living, care for their children, and break free from the cycle of poverty.
What began in a small meeting room has now grown into a vibrant network of families, educators, and community allies. Together, we have hosted workshops that give parents practical skills and renewed confidence. Partnered with schools and local organizations to open the doors of inclusive education and activities for children with disabilities.
Spoken up for policy changes that make public spaces, services, and opportunities accessible to all.
Provided 120 microloans to disadvantaged women living with HIV, giving them a chance to rebuild their lives and support their children.
Today, POCWIDA is a registered, non-profit organization that stands on the values of transparency, accountability, and deep community involvement. But more than that—we are a family.
